Time = Money : So Increase Your Time - Two Tips…

I’m not talking about increasing your time on earth but increasing your ‘workable’ time on your computer.

Some of us have to work on a somewhat crappy computer all day. Slowed down by all the erroneous crap that invariably ends up hiding somewhere on your filesystem. For a lot of us our computer is our bread and butter, and what if you went to get your butter to feed your 6 illegitimate children and there was a lag on the fridge door?

Crises I tell you, thats what.

Reduce Dreamweaver Lag

One of the main culprits of lag is DreamWeaver, especially if you have it consistently open and you are consistently working on a bunch of different files from different sites etc. etc. Sometimes the drag gets so bad that from making a minor change in the code to viewing in a browser and back to the code again I would estimate lag time to be 85% of the process.

I recently came across this page which outlines a number of ‘hacks’ to make your dreamweaver run a lot more smoothly, especially if you spend all your time in the code view like me. There are a number of great little hacks in there, don’t worry about the warning at the top, you’re not gonna break anything unless you completely cock something up :)

Clean Up Your Hard drive

Another culprit of just generally wasting your time is a full and fragmented hard drive. There is an excellent tool that will generate a visual display of your hard drive called sequoia view, you can see at a glance what files are taking up the most space and navigate straight to them to delete them through the interface that sequoia view provides. You can use the tool on any part of your file system you want and highlight the files by attributes such as file type.

This really is an awesome tool for cleaning up your hard drive and I don’t know how I got along without it, I removed about 10gigs pretty easily by throwing a few things onto compact disc. After removing all the extra crap on your computer you will want to leave the defrag running over night.

With these two you should see a noticeable increase in system performance - and spend less time working, or at least spend less time working.
